The Acupuncture Needle

The acupuncture needle is a thin, hair-like flexible needle. It is considerably smaller in diameter than the hypodermic needle commonly used for medication injection and blood drawing. The acupuncture needle has a solid pin-like tip, contrary to the hollow hypodermic needle which has a sharp cutting edge. Introduction of the acupuncture needle into the skin is not as uncomfortable as the hypodermic needle. If the site of insertion is not associated with an area of pre-existing soreness or tenderness, there is only minimal discomfort, and the patient may not even be aware that the acupuncture needle has been inserted. Once the acupuncture needle is in place, no pain should be experienced. Since only disposable acupuncture needles are used in this office, there is no chance of contamination or transmission of infection to the patient from prior use.
