Intrathecal
Baclofen: Patient Benefits
- Decreased
spasticity results in decreased pain, improvement in activities
of daily living (ADL), advancement in the performance of bowel
and bladder programs, and improved quality of sleep.
- Compared
to oral therapies, ITB markedly reduces intolerable side effects
of spasticity and medication ( such as feeling drugged, mentally
sluggish, and impaired memory) and in a vast majority eliminates
needs for other spasticity medications or treatments such as
destructive orthopedic procedures or ablative neurosurgical interventions.
- ITB
can be used in conjunction with other therapies.
Intrathecal
Baclofen: BOWEL & BLADDER FUNCTION
Evaluated
in 3 studies
- 18/24
improved bladder management.
- 7/7
improved bladder functionimprovements: increased bladder volume,
change from indwelling catheter management to intermittent catheterizations,
increased continence between catheterizations, decreased urinary
infections.
- 7/7
improved bowel programs.

Results
of ITB Trials in Patients with Spasticity of Spinal Cord Origin:
- Decreased
lower extremity ashworth scores
- Decreased
spasm score
- Effectiveness
maintained over many years, without long-term need for continually
increasing dosing
